Martial Arts (Iron Fist, Katana… and a rant about designing decent superhero cocktails that aren’t intellectually lazy)

KIAI! Let’s get to today’s recipes right away…

ironfist

IRON FIST

Shake two parts separately with ice and layer them one after another in the shot glass.

1st part. brown:

1 to 2 parts DOM Benedictine

1 part Kahlúa

2nd part, green:

1 part blanco tequila/vodka

1 part Midori

If you compare to my earlier layered drinks, JokerThe Atom and Mr.Mxyzptlk… this is much more difficult to layer, the density differences of Iron Fist aren’t as big as in those drinks… you really need more stable hand when trickleing that green part on atop of a brown one… but it isn’t the most difficult layered drink ever.

You don’t know how to layer the drink? Check out the internet or any cocktail book, it really isn’t that difficult… little practice and you’re fine.

So Iron Fist The Cocktail is a shot, because he hits so fast, everyone gets that… but what’s with brown and green colour?

I’ve said it before, for example in Wolverine… purely thematic superhero cocktails are a lazy solution. One of the main reasons for starting this blog… existing recipes for superheroes are mostly designed with some colour theme in  mind, eg. “it’s Green Lantern because it contains Sprite, some vodka and green liqueur and Deadpool is red and black liqueurs layered”… doh! How intellectually lazy can you get?

I’m not saying that my approach is the best, but I dare to say it’s better than just playing with colours…

Colour/representation is a part of the cocktail experience, I don’t deny it, but the most important part is the taste: how well it describes the character. Matching colour pattern is bonus, but mostly I concentrate on the taste.

When designing a cocktail for a certain superhero/villain, if I have to decide between colour and ” the feel” of the character, I go for the “the feel”… for example Two-Face: what an earth has the red colour have to do with the character? Nothing. This is one of the situtations I’ve decided to go with “The Feel” instead of trying to design black-and-white cocktail just for the thematics.

So, after ALL THIS RANT… what’s with the brown and green colour?

Some of the readers might know that comics legend John Byrne is slightly colour blind, especially with certain shades of green and brown… and the temporary colour change in Iron Fist’s outfit is because of this.

So it’s thematics, partly, but not purely… as I said earlier, Iron Fist The Cocktail is a shot because he hits so fast… but “The Fast” of the punch is also in the taste of the drink: as in The Atom, stealthy hitter of an sub-atomic size… the less sweet part hits you first, then the sweeter part gives another kind of sensation… despite of this similarity The Atom and Iron Fist are not identical drinks, as you will see if you try them.

katana

KATANA

10 parts sake (or soju, see below)

1 part Orange Curacao (or Grand Marnier)

1 part sloe gin

(1 part cognac… but first try without it)

few drops of vinegar

Shake with ice and few pieces of pear and strain into cocktail glass. Please don’t shake the drink too cold, little “cooling down” is fine.

Yes, pear. I don’t know why, but this cocktail ends up tasting somehow better that way, even if you don’t get “oh, there’s that hint of pear”-sensation… you can see couple of small jots of pear in the glass pictured above, by the way.

This cocktail has the same design philosophy as Thor (Mjolnir): “use alcohol which originates from the region where character is from as the base for the drink… and if that alcohol happens to have distinct aroma, respect it, don’t just throw it in there for thematic reasons.”

Using soju instead of sake for this drink… Soju, korean rice alcohol, actually works better than sake on this one. Distilled rice has right kind of kick, compared to just fermented… and with “kick” I don’t mean just more alcohol content: I tested this with 25% Ilpoom Jinro, it’s not that strong.

The most important thing is to use some kind of rice wine, carefully mixed with “supporting” alcohol beverages: to enjoy the taste of “alcoholized” rice, instead of drowning it.

That’s it. Much rant, and couple of cocktails too. Now I’m going to to check out today’s sumo matches: it’s day three of the Kyushu Basho! I started with “KIAI!”, and I’ll end this post with “HAKKEYOI!” 😀

Girl Power 7 (Black Cat, Starfire)

Previous Girl Power post… Big Barda, She-Hulk

Halloween is over, and it’s time to move on. In today’s cocktails we’ll utilize Lillet Blanc, as we’ve done before… Bumblebee and Wasp,  Namor, Wolverine and Ozymandias.

blackcatkayttis

BLACK CAT

6 parts Lillet Blanc

1 to 1,5 parts Kahlúa

2 parts gin

dash of Green Chartreuse

Stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass with some crushed ice in it. Garnish with cherry and lime wedge.

Lime wedge is optional. Tiny dash of lime “dulls” the overall taste a bit, and some people prefer it that way: I personally enjoy this cocktail without any lime.

Even if you feel that aroma need a little cutdown, use very little lime, basically just the amount that naturally dilutes from the wedge: othervise this elegant cocktail turns into boring broth.

starfirekayttis

STARFIRE

Orange part:

10 parts Lillet Blanc

2 parts orange juice

1 part Campari

Purple part:

red grenadine

simple syrup

Blue Curacao or blue grenadine

Prepare the purple part first, as in Joker: pour some red grenadine into stirring jar, add simple syrup until colour is light red. Then add blue colour, very little, stirring, adding… until the colour in nice purple. Please leave Joker’s punchline out of this ;P

Pour some purple into cocktail glass. Then stir other ingredients with ice and carefully layer on the top.

Test Subjects gave approving nod to this one. Princess Koriand’r, Princess of Tamaran, can be seen as romantic character, getting married and widowed and getting married again… but I think there’s more to her character.

I hope her fans find this drink as appropriate tribute. Even Campari Lovers might get little exhausted while drinking this, but in the end there’s sweet dessert.

Until next time! 😀

Preparing for Halloween, again (Blade, John Constantine)

Last year I published Halloween-inspired superhero cocktails in two parts: Part 1: Ghost Rider, Jack O’Lantern and Part 2: Hellboy, The Punisher.

This Halloween we’ll just have to manage with one post. I’ve updated Halloween cocktail compilation: in addition to today’s recipes I’ve included good ol’ pumpkin lantern tossing Green Goblin and horror classic Swamp Thing.

Please feel free to check it out in Recipes and downloads.

blade

BLADE

What would (half)vampire like to drink? A shot of blood, naturally.

2 to 3 parts ginger rum

1 part Creme de Cassis

Shake with ice and strain into a shot glass.

For manufacturing ginger rum, please see Wonder Woman (Golden Lasso).

johnconstantine

JOHN CONSTANTINE

4 parts gin

2 parts Passõa

1 part Campari

4 parts blood grapefruit juice, hand-squeezed

Shake with ice and strain into old fashioned glass with some ice in it. Garnish with grapefruit wedge, serve with a pack of Silk Cuts ;P

Naturally J. Constantine’s cocktail had to based in gin… and what else? With my other sorcerer drinks, Dr. Fate, Dr. Strange and Zatanna Zatara, I created “whirlwinds of taste” while trying to describe their arcane powers…

With Constantine I decided to forget about his powers and instead go for his dry wit and cynical attitude. Gin, Campari, grapefruit… can you get more “dry”? Passõa is a little relief, it gives a nice touch.

That’s it, see you next time… and have a Happy Halloween!

Misery loves company (Cloak and Dagger)

I’m not sure if I’m introducing one or two cocktail recipes this time… but I’m sure they make one helluva pair!

cloakdagger1

CLOAK & DAGGER

Cloak

3 parts Skittles tequila

1 part sweet red vermouth

6 to 8 parts Coca-Cola

OR…

3 parts Skittles tequila

2 parts sweet red vermouth

6 to 8 parts Coca-Cola

1 part coffee

Stir with ice and strain into old fashioned glass with some ice in it.

How to make Skittles tequila, please see Clayface. If you fancy a version with a coffee, please check out Black Mamba to see what kind of brew I mean.

Dagger

2 or more parts ginger rum

2 parts cream

1 part simple syrup

Shake with ice and strain into a shot glass.

For manufacturing ginger rum, please see Wonder Woman (Golden Lasso).

So how I’m supposed to drink these? Start with Cloak, sipping… after a while you get kinda bored to the taste, I know you will… Shoot Dagger, and suddenly you feel lucky to have some Cloak left.

I admit… no, actually I brag: neither one of these aren’t good drinks on their own! Cloak is somehow too “overwhelming”, halfway through the glass and you think you’re done (there’s a reason why Cloak doesn’t use big highball glass)…

…then enter Dagger! On it’s own, it’s pretty bland, only twist being that slight ginger “burn”… but it instantly washes away Cloak’s heavy taste.

Now your mouth has cream coating and it isn’t pleasant, in addition you want to put out fiery ginger… and suddenly Cloak is you best friend again.

Two drinks that complete one another. If there’s a better way to describe Cloak & Dagger, I don’t know what it is. Just make sure you don’t use too big glass for Cloak… or you’ll need two Daggers 😀

Thank You, Test Subject B., for enduring quite too many tasting/testing sessions! Some of the silts I forced you to try were pretty horrific… but we made it, this pair works!

Next time… HALLOWEEN! 😀

Cosmic Power, once again (Mr.Mxyzptlk, Silver Surfer)

I’ve used Cosmic Power twice before as my guideline in the post: Galactus and Spectre.  They were accompanied by couple of fellas with bows, Green Arrow and Hawkeye… but no bows this time, only Cosmic Power.

Mrmx

If this blog wouldn’t be about superhero cocktails, I would call this “Jupiter”.

MR. MXYZPTLK

This is certainly the most laborious cocktail to prepare in this blog, by far… and it’s “technical description”, philosophy and all, it’s going to be longest of them all. And, if you prepare it into half-liter glass, as in the globe above, you’re gonna be in “The Party Mood” after drinking just one glass. Thanks for delightful novelty highball glass, Test Subject S.!

So, the recipe…

Prepare the layers separately beforehand and then layer them one by one. I think the best way is to mix them all up separately, add ice and shake the one which is about to be layered, and proceed layer by layer.

Start with putting lots of ice in the big highball glass, then start layering… from the first to the last, i.e. from bottom toward the top:

1st layer, brown:

3 parts Kahlúa

1 part ginger rum (see below)

2nd layer, purple (see below):

1 part Parfait Amour

1 part Triple Sec

dash of Tabasco sauce

3rd layer, red:

2 parts Passõa

1 part Campari

4th layerdark yellow:

1 part white rum

1 part dark rum

2 parts orange juice

2 parts pineapple juice

few dashes of Angostura Bitters

5th layer, light yellow:

1 part vodka

1 part pineapple juice

Phew, that’s it! Add a straw and maybe some weird garnish (or serve the drink in the weird glass, as pictured). Drink with straw, altering between different layers randomly.

The layers of this drink have pretty different densities, i.e. sugar and/or alcohol percentages, they should layer with ease. By the way, my other layered drinks, so far, are Joker and The Atom.

Brown layer… First time I used ginger rum in Wonder Woman (Golden Lasso) and The Flash, check out that post how it’s done. The brown layer is basically Judge Anderson.

The second layer, purple, is the drink that I’ve known as Paradiso: 1 part Parfait Amour, 1 part Triple Sec, garnish with tangerine peel… except we’ll replace peel with Tabasco sauce to create A Twist, bit like in the Punch Line of Joker.

You can skip the purple layer, if you absolutely have to. I wouldn’t recommed it, though: althought you actually can’t see the purple layer as a clear line between brown and red layer, you can see the lack of it, if you know what I mean. Purple layer’s taste isn’t the most dominant in this one, but it’s nice to taste it in there now and then, to search for it: certain kind of weird sweet, with a Tabasco twist.

Red layer is basically Two-Face, modified for this purpose: less Passõa works better for this purpose, I think. Anyway, passion fruit with nice Campari twist.

Dark yellow is my version of Planter’s Punch. I’ve served it as a punch under the name “Voodoo Magic” and shamelessly I think it’s better than official IBA version: it does NOT need any lime/lemon or added sugar, it’s better without them, “weight” of dark rum eased with some white rum… more “mystical”, more “intoxicating”… more “voodoo”.

Light Yellow is pretty sharp in taste, and it’s purpose is to counterbalance all that melting ice that keeps the drink cold.

SO… all layers have a taste with a twist… and there are lots of layers, so it’s a twist after a twist when you move your straw randomly and taste little here, little there… it’s an avalanche of tastes…

…and that’s how it should be, considering Mr. Mxyzptlk is the 5th dimension inhabitant, almost omnipotent being who can ridicule Superman as he wishes.

Preparing this drink is a huge task… luckily the next one is much more easier…

silversurfer

Aluminium foil is the best I could come up with… but it works surprisingly well… I guess.

SILVER SURFER

2 to 3 parts Bols Cacao White

1 part kirschwasser

Shake with ice and strain into a shot glass.

Silver Surfer can zoom at incredible speeds with his board, so I guess he is best represented with a shot (since it’s enjoyed fast). Some might say that the unholy union of Cacao and strong bitterish cherry isn’t Mysterious and Cosmic enough… I think it is.

I used Cacao White in many Fantastic Four Cocktails, so if you wanna have a F4-themed cocktail party, their adversary’s cocktail’s ingredient is already included in the shopping list. You still need to buy kirschwasser for this one, though.

Phew, that really was pretty laborious, and Mr. Mxyzptlk sure is a huge task to prepare… Something much more easy next time…

O Canada! (Aurora, Northstar… and Maple Leaf, Caribou)

Any fans of John Byrne’s Alpha Flight out there? Here’s a treat for you, Beaubier Twins in cocktail form!

aurora

AURORA

2 (or more) parts licorice vodka

2 parts coffee

1 part maple syrup

Stir with ice and strain into a shot glass OR stir without ice, to create house temperature shot for those cold winter nights when cooled down shots are a bit too much. In either case, top with cream… or I’d prefer whipped cream.

Licorice vodka, what is it? I’ve used it in many cocktails, check out Harley Quinn how it’s done.

About coffee… don’t use your strongest espresso, please see Black Mamba and Princess Python what kind of brew we’re looking for.

northstar

NORTHSTAR

3 parts licorice vodka

1 part blanco tequila or (for more sting) mezcal

2 parts coffee

1 part maple syrup

As with Aurora… either stir with or without ice, strain into cocktail glass and top with (whipped) cream.

I’d really like to visit Canada one day. Everyone I know who has visited or lived in that country say it’s a nice place, friendly people.

I don’t care about cities much. I admit I’m “a nature freak”, I like to spend my vacations in wilderness… and there is plenty of that in Canada, I gather. I’m not very excited about frozen wilderness, we got plenty of that here in Finland during wintertime (althought I know it’s different there)…

British Columbia would be nice, to see temperate rainforests during summer. I love forests, especially rainforests… and my love for tropical jungles forces me to visit them again and again…

…so I guess I’ll never have money for visiting Canada and her forests :/ Every time there’s “too much money” accumulated in my bank account, I start planning my next trip… and I either end up visiting my relatives in Ireland, or more often, get drawn towards sweating and stumbling in the tropical jungle 😀

Oh my, I feel like spamming couple of travel photos… I’ve done it four times before: inspired by my trip to Rwanda and Uganda (Non-superhero cocktails Punishment Island and Pygmy Dance and Black Panther and Gorilla Grodd), one picture of the beach in Tobago (Aquaman, Namor) and random pictures from Ireland (Riddler and Kal-El)… they’re all written long time ago, so I guess it’s okay to do that again…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

View from Surinamese jungle. Nothing special here, for me it’s okay just to hike in the jungle “without any highlights” (to me, every second there is sensational)… just wanted to photograph those bright red heliconias in the middle of the evergreen jungle. On the background you can see an opening, that’s River Suriname…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…The same river at the very first light of dawn. I left my hut in the middle of the night to take a nighttime hike in the jungle by myself, it was awesome! I made it back to the clearing just in time to see this sunrise.

And let’s not forget this blog’s theme, alcohol… while in Suriname you should try local rum, borgoe! 15 yo brands tend to be too smooth for my taste, 8 yo’s have decent “sharp/smooth-ratio”. Cheaper ones, even total “cheapos”, are also okay when you do the trick I learned from friendly locals in nation’s capital Paramaribo before hitting The Bush: little splash of lime and Coke turn even the cheapest “firewater” palatable.

…and if you’re into “firewater adventure”, check out Mariënburg Very Strong Rum, it’s 90%/180 proof! It really “clears your throat”… I enjoyed it straight, accompanied with a LARGE glass of water. It was an experience, I assure you.

And now it’s time to get back to actual topic, the cocktails!

mapleleaf

MAPLE LEAF

2 parts bourbon

1 part lemon juice

maple syrup, to taste

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass with some crushed ice in it. Feel free to adjust bourbon/lemon juice-ratio.

I guess everyone knew this cocktail already? When I started this blog I wanted to bring up some excellent cocktails which, to my knowledge, aren’t widely known… Silk StockingDirty DevilFrench InterventionBullfrogJack FrostVida VerdeTony Bennett (NOT the usual version)Freedom Fighter and Crocodile and Alligator.

Somewhere along the way I forgot about publishing those recipes, got too carried away with my own designs… but that’s what this blog is about after all, superhero cocktails! I just thought to make sure everyone knows Maple Leaf…

…and then there’s Caribou.

CARIBOU

Sorry, no pic. Looks like a glass of red wine.

This is widely known, at least in Quebec. As with Maple Leaf above: just making sure everyone is informed…

My version of Caribou:

2 parts red wine

1 part Canadian whisky

up to 1/3 part maple syrup

Stir with ice and strain into wine glass. Sometimes I crave for an ice cube in this.

There seems to be about kwazillion versions of Caribou. I compiled the prevailing principles for making the drink…

1. The drink can be either cold or warmed up. Sometimes some ice can be added to cold version, or it can even be served in a glass made out of ice.

2. The main ingredient is red and/or port wine, sometimes with some sherry. Any given mixture makes up the majority of the drink, up to 75%.

3. Smaller and stronger part consists of one, some or all of the following alcohols: whisky, vodka, brandy or even rum.

4. It’s sweetened using maple syrup or sugar.

5. Sometimes, especially when served heated, spices are added; cloves and nutmeg are obvious choices.

So everyone has her/his favourite version of Caribou, feel free to explore. Be warned: mixture of distilled alcohol and wine is dangerous to some, I’ve noticed. People easily start drinking it as quickly and as much as plain wine… resulting in too much alcohol, too severe hangover.

I don’t have this problem (I might be a drunk but I know my limits 😀 ) but I’ve noticed that many people have: there’s something deceiving in mixing wine and spirits.

Keeping that in mind… enjoy your cocktails! See you next week!

Girl Power 6 (Big Barda, She-Hulk)

It’s not too long since my last Girl Power post but I’ll add sixth part to that series anyway… and I’m working on the seventh ;P

bigbarda

BIG BARDA

2 parts Creme de Cassis

1 part vodka

2 parts cream

2 parts simple syrup (or red grenadine, see below)

Shake with ice and strain into suitable glass with some ice in it. Garnish with cherry and orange wedge.

This might be a highball, but somehow I find a big glass of this a bit arduous to finish… so maybe a old fashioned glass or a small highball? By the way, same thing with Chemo: I just love it, one of my best creations (even though I understand why some don’t like it), but I’ve never been able to drink more than one small highball glass of it any given day… it’s all that cream, it just fills you up.

Big Barda The Cocktal is pink, because she is a lady; it is surly/dark pink because she isn’t a nice lady. Same logic as in Storm The Cocktail: lady-like, but not quite. If you prefer your drink more red, use red grenadine instead of simple syrup: substituting part of it or simply all of it.

Speaking of red grenadine… if you find this drink “a bit too mean” but love the basic idea of sugar+cream+alcohol, you should check out Supergirl… which, I just now realized, was published in my very first Girl Power post. Oh, so the time flies.

shehulk

SHE-HULK

1 part bourbon

1 part Galliano

4 part brown or yellow energy drink (eg. Battery)

2 parts pineapple juice

Blue Curacao, for adjusting colour

dash of lemon juice

(vanilla extract, if Galliano isn’t enough for you).

Build into highball glass, add ice and straw. Garnish with lemon wedge and/or peel. I’ve started to use use opaque green ice in my green drinks, it looks nice. Mostly water, some orange juice, Blue Curacao to adjust the colour.

What can I say… likely fusion of Hulk and Hulk The Mocktail. There’s no “Hulk drinking game”-aspect in She-Hulk, as she retains her own personality nevertheless her superpowers.

Okay, thank you for your attention. See you next time.

Couple of very strong drinks (Shazam, Black Adam)

shazam

SHAZAM!

So… who/what is S.H.A.Z.A.M. The Cocktail?

Wisdom of Solomon: lime juice (because sour taste “awakes”, makes you “sharp”)

Strenght of Hercules: vodka (pure ethanol strenght)

Stamina of Atlas: tequila (because slamming tequila is usually associated with “stamina”, eg. desperately trying to stay awake in the party, too drunk, when you really should be home sleeping)

Power of Zeus: absinth (that’s The Power!)

Courage of Achilles: mezcal (it usually takes some persuasion to make person taste mezcal after they have sniffed it)

Speed of Mercury: simple syrup (because our taste buds pick up sweet taste first, eg. in the “punch line” of Joker)

…and some cranberry juice to represent Billy Batson, one person in whom all these powers manifest themself.

So, the actual recipe…

2 parts vodka

2 parts tequila (blanco or reposado)

2 parts absinth (see below)

2 parts mezcal (San Cosme recommended, as usual)

3 parts lime juice

4 parts simple syrup

dash of cranberry juice

Shake with ice and strain into highball glass with lots of ice in it.

About cranberry juice… as usual, please do not use pre-mixed juice drinks, but high quality concentrate diluted with water 1:1 ratio instead of recommended 3:1 or 4:1.

About absinth… as with all of my cocktail recipes, please use absinth that is less spicy and more heavy with anise. These absinths tend to be less green, usually wholly transparent in colour.

Observant readers notice that this drink is basically a Long Island Iced Tea variant. Shazam is a bundle of different powers, as L.I.I. Tea is a bundle of different alcohols thrown together in highball glass… infamous “Tea” is associated with very strong alcohol content (with good reason), and Shazam is thought to be very strong… so that’s my philosophy behind Shazam the Cocktail.

If you like the basic idea of this drink but you find it too strong either in taste or alcohol content, please check out Galactus. It has many similarities, but is a bit more “friendly” to drink, while still maintaining the feel of Raw Cosmic Power. Many of my Test Subjects praise that concoction.

blackadam

BLACK ADAM

2 parts vodka

2 parts mezcal (once again, San Cosme recommended)

1,5 parts Midori

1 part Gammel Dansk

4 parts cranberry juice

1,5 parts lime juice

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass. If you want some decoration, garnish the drink as you would garnish Cosmopolitan…

…because Black Adam The Cocktail is very weird Cosmopolitan variant, as Shazam is L.I.I. Tea variant.

While designing Black Adam I experimented with same ingredients I used in Shazam, because both draw strenght from the same source (kind of). As Black Adam is evil adversary (or “antihero” at least), I was prepared to add some bitter elements…

…and this published recipe is the best experiment result. The taste makes weird “curve” from your lips through your palate, kind of avoiding your tongue before ending up in your throat: it stays there for a moment… and after a sip, when you do that little lick at your lower lip, as we all unconciously do, you taste weird “salty” taste.

Shazam draws power from Solomon-Hercules-Atlas-Zeus-Achilles-Mercury-combo, Black Adam from Shu-Horus-Amon-Zehuti-Aton-Mehen… both drinks partly share same ingredients and are both “storm of tastes”: cocktail “twins”, good and evil. I’m pretty content with them, especially Black Adam.

Something less strong next time :D, see you then.

Boy Wonder… grown up (Nightwing, Robin)

With the introduction of these two cocktails I’m able to introduce one more recipe compilation; Batman, his few allies and most importantly, his extensive Rogue Gallery… you’ll find it in Recipes and downloads.

nightwing

NIGHTWING

3 parts vodka

4 parts port wine

1 part Kahlúa

Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass.

This cocktail has brutal, yet somehow intriguing taste; I think it’s a decent representation of Nightwing. But let’s take a look at Dick Grayson before he ended up patrolling the back alleys of Blüdhaven…

robin

ROBIN

2 parts Passõa

2 parts cranberry juice

1 to 2 parts gin

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with something yellow and green: for example with lemon wedge and a sprig of mint.

In the case you didn’t guess it already… for cranberry juice please do not use pre-mixed juice drinks. I strongly recommed high quality concentrate diluted with water 1:1 ratio instead of recommended 3:1 or 4:1.

So this is The Boy Wonder Cocktail… original Robin truly was highly annoying thorn on Bat-adversaries’ side, so I decided to give his cocktail “an irritating taste”… Passõa and cranberry blend together in a weird way: mixture tastes good, but somehow it agitates you. And surprise surprise: more gin you add, less “irritating” the taste gets. So 1 part gin gives you annoying Boy Wonder at his fullest, 2 parts creates “more peaceful” result… I don’t recommend 3 or more parts gin, the whole idea of the cocktail begins to wash away with all that gin.

If you’re interested in cocktails where cranberry blends with other aromas, creating interesting results, you should check out eg. Man-Bat and The Punisher.

That’s about it. See you in a week or so 😀

Girl Power, part V (Circe, Huntress)

Previous Girl Power posts: Batgirl and SupergirlStorm and Scarlet WitchCheetah and Wonder Woman, and Storm (Ororo) and Thundra.

Summer is drawing to an end… so there are certain “gloomy and dark” tones in today’s cocktails. Let’s start with starker recipe, and move on to the “easier” drink.

circe

CIRCE

3 parts Triple Sec

1 part Campari

4 parts beetroot juice

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass. “Hypnotic” garnish, whatever you think it is.

Beetroot juice, again… I’ve used it in Mystique and Nightcrawler, and in Psylocke. The first two resemble each other (on purpose), Psylocke is totally different… Circe is one more drink using that particular juice, and once again different. I’m pretty pleased that I’ve managed to create so many different recipes with that challenging ingredient.

I might come back to beetroot juice sometime in the future, but not for a while. Meanwhile, on to the next cocktail…

huntress

HUNTRESS

1 part Gammel Dansk

4 parts port wine

4 parts Coca-Cola

Stir with ice and strain into highball glass, add some ice.

Port wine has really distinct taste. In my opinion, it needs to be “quenched down” a bit, but just a bit: you want to retain that certain “sting”. I think I succeeded with that in Anaconda, and I hope you’ll approve my effort with Huntress.

I got so carried away with port wine’s “dark” potential I designed another cocktail using it… Nightwing. And what’s more suitable pair to publish with that drink than Robin?

So, see you in a week or so ;P
