“Seeing” Red… (Daredevil, Elektra)

In Martian Manhunter and Mole Man post I bemoaned how I end up designing so many green drinks… and I’ve published even more of them since that time I opened my heart; and I guess we’ll see many greens in the future…

…but this time both cocktails are RED!

daredevil.jpg

DAREDEVIL

-3 parts whiskey

-1 part Aperol

-1 part red grenadine

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass.

Inspiration for this drink… I wanted this to be distinctively “New Yorker” both in taste and feel, with added “blind” element… so I used actual “New Yorker” Cocktail as a basis.

I you google “New Yorker Cocktail” you’ll find many variations, all revolving around bourbon, lime and sugar (and maybe something else). My foundation (and the best New Yorker Cocktail out there) for Daredevil is…

-6 parts Jack Daniels

-1 part lime juice

-1 part red grenadine

So, I replaced lime sour with Aperol bitter to add a sense of “grim and mystery”, adjusted the ratios… and ended up swapping bourbon to whiskey. If you prefer bourbon…

DAREDEVIL, “The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen”-version

As Daredevil above , but substitute whiskey with bourbon (Jim Beam recommended).

Both versions of Daredevil are okay for socializing, sweet-ish and easy. Same cannot be said for the next one…

elektra

ELEKTRA

-8 parts vodka

-4 parts Noilly Prat (please don’t substitute with any other vermouth)

-2 parts Aperol

-1 to 2 parts of Ouzo (or similar alcohol with distinct anise flavour)

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass.

Make no mistake, this apertif is LETHAL. As unforgiving as Vodka Martini, but with added brutality in the form of Aperol; Ouzo adds a surprising element… I’ll think it’s safe to say that all the required elements are there, it’s justified to name this cocktail after Elektra.

See you next week, with different heroes and different colour themes 😀

Law of the Jungle (Black Panther, Gorilla Grodd)

In the last post I introduced couple of cocktails using Ugandan gin, Uganda Waragi.  If you ever get a bottle of Waragi in your hands, please try them out… but since it’s not readily available everywhere, I guess it’s time to use more common spirits in next recipes.

I’m going to stay inspired by my trip to Rwanda and Uganda, to jungles and to savannahs, but moving back to blog’s original theme, superheroes…

blackpantherkayttis

BLACK PANTHER

Okay, I didn’t visit Wakanda ;P, but nevertheless I’m going to introduce this drink.

1 part white rum

1 part Bols White Cocoa

1 part Gammel Dansk

2 parts cherry juice

1 part apple juice

(black food colouring, see below)

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass, garnish with cherry. And as many times before… for cherry juice use concentrate diluted with water 1:1 ratio instead of recommendation (usually 3:1 or 4:1).

You noticed the “off-place” ingredient… why Gammel Dansk? All the other ingredients of the drink are designed to create a whirlwind of “Africa’s Nature’s Aroma” in drinker’s mouth… but there’s also all kind of dangers lurking in that beautiful landscape, and that’s the element I want to represent with the bitterness of Gammel Dansk.

I’m a Big Fan of Fernet Branca, and I’ve used it a lot (eg. Dark Knight, Swamp Thing, Black Widow) …actually too much: some Test Subjects (rightfully) told me to take it easy with Branca. So, I tried Gammel Dansk instead: it cannot be substituted by using less Branca. Even tiny amounts of F.B. have distinct, “violent” taste: Gammel Dansk is bitter all right, but more subtle.

And this is not the first time I’ve utilized Gammel Dansk… I did it in Jack O’Lantern.

blackpanther2

EDIT: as “Reader D.” pointed out, using black colouring agent really turns it into a Black Panther The Cocktail… I guess many people have done it already; I admit, I’m always more interested in creating the taste, the looks come a distant second… to the point where I ignore it almost completely 😦

To enhance the cocktail to even more blackpanterish… Rim the cocktail glass with suitable purple sugar etc., to give it the purple halo of T’Challa in black costume. I tried it, looks fine, but the photos were so awful I didn’t dare to publish them.

EDIT: Check out another version of Black Panther here.

DSC00602

I didn’t see any leopards, black or regular, but I managed to observe some lions in Uganda. However, the absolute highlights of the trip were visits to Volcanoes National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable N.P. to see mountain gorillas…

DSC00433

Silverback taking a nap... and who can blame him, eating 30 kilograms of leaves and bamboo shoots per day sounds exhausting! I heard that sometimes shoots can ferment, resulting in gorillas with hangover… and that brings us to our next cocktail…

gorillagroddkayttis

GORILLA GRODD

No bamboo shoots here, but Gammel Dansk again. I justify using it with same argument as in Black Panther: stalking danger somewhere in the bush… mountain gorillas aren’t aggressive, but Gorilla Grodd sure is!

I decided to go for frappé with this one… it’s my fourth recipe in that concept: first two were Riddler and Kal-El, third was Dr. Octopus last autumn. Purple colour is inspired by G-Grodd’s cape 😀

3 parts Parfait Amour

2 parts Triple Sec

1 part Gammel Dansk

Cool suitable glasses beforehand in the freezer. Just before serving fill them with crushed or shaven ice. Shake ingredients with ice, vigorously until glacially cold, and strain into glasses. Add straw.

I hope these cocktails bring you the feeling of equatorial Africa, I sure need that feeling here in cold and dark Finland in the middle of the winter. Few more pics from the trip…

DSC00901

…and so on. I abstain myself of spamming too many travel pics, this blog is about cocktails.

Okay, take care. Stay tuned for more cocktail recipes!

Greetings from Africa! (Two non-superhero cocktail recipes)

Hello, dear cocktail drinkers, and a Happy New Year 2018!

(This time I’ll publish two cocktails, but they’ve nothing to do with superheroes. Don’t worry, I will return to heroes in the next post… but keep on reading. Some might judge this post as “commercial in nature”, but since I won’t be referring to any trademarked superheroes I guess it’s okay.)

My trip to Rwanda and Uganda was truly amazing… but this blog is not about travelling, but cocktails. Still, I’m compelled to tell you a little bit about Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda: it truly is a beautiful place. Just a couple of pictures from my boat trip early in the morning, still with some mist in the air…

DSC01008

DSC01022

I could spam dozens of photos of Lake Bunyonyi, but I’ll just tease you with these two; you’ll have to visit the place yourself… and there’s another reason for visiting the lake: certain local hotel serves two cocktails, designed by Yours Truly!

Before arriving to Lake Bunyonyi, while travelling through southwestern Uganda, I’d been sipping local specialty almost every evening, “after a hard day’s work”…

UG

Uganda Waragi, Ugandan Premium Gin.

“Waragi” translates as “moonshine”, but local distillery has made a brand of that traditional term. Well, as a gin Waragi can’t compete with quality brands… because, to be honest, it’s “firewater”! Anyway, something in Waragi’s brutal aroma brought me to order it evening after evening…

Aftertaste has some gin elements, but the first kick is overwhelmingly fruity, backed up with raw “bouquet” of ethanol… I wouldn’t call this “gin” but “fruity vodka-ish”.

At my last night in Uganda, after dinner, I got an idea… why not design a cocktail using local alcohol? The hotel offered some cocktails in their list, of course, but they were global sure choices… I wanted some “local colour”… so, with the help of the most co-operative staff I developed a cocktail thematically linked to the lake…

…and maybe I’m pretty competent cocktail drunkard, since I nailed it with first try! So, Ladies and Gentlemen, I proudly present…

Punishment Island

PUNISHMENT ISLAND

-3 parts Uganda Waragi

-1 part Midori

-dash of lime

Shake with ice, strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with lime wedge.

Photo is from that particular moment the cocktail was born. I ordered another, with a larger portion of Midori, but that wasn’t satisfactory. I tried the first version next day before the lunch, using couple of my co-travellers as Test Subjects… and it still was a great cocktail, so I guess it’s safe to publish it.

Even though Midori is a sweet liqueur, I would serve “Punishment Island” as a apertif. But what’s this “Punishment Island” thing?…

DSC00989

Punishment Island.

Punishment Island is the most notorious of  Lake Bunyonyi’s 29 islands. In the old days, non-married women giving birth were shipped to that small islet with their baby, both to be starved to death as punishment.

Pretty brutal, but luckily those days are long gone. I named the cocktail after that island because I wanted to give hotel’s cocktail list some local colour… and drinking too many “Punishment Islands” certainly will PUNISH you next morning! ;P

I’m happy to say that hotel manager loved with my creation. I bought a bottle of Uganda Waragi and brought it to Finland: I wanted to offer “Punishment Island” to my Regular Test Subjects (they approved it, too).

Also, I promised the hotel manager to design another cocktail using local Waragi, send him the recipe when I discover something worth publishing… so here it is…

Pygmy Dance

Totally non-photoshopped (and pretty crude) picture of “Pygmy Dance” on my kitchen table, with ingredients on the background.

PYGMY DANCE

-3 parts Uganda Waragi

-2 parts Amaretto di Saronno

-2 parts Coca-Cola

Stir ingredients with ice (shaking Coke isn’t such a great idea), strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with cocktail cherry.

(Inspiration to this drink came from Batwa Pygmy People I visited on the other side of the lake)

I designed Pygmy Dance as a digestive, sweet dessert… you could also try 5 parts Waragi, 3 parts both Disaronno and Coke for more generic cocktail. Since you probably won’t be able to get hold of a bottle of Waragi, you can substitute it by using the dryest London Dry Gin you can find. It won’t be the same… but better than nothing. Unfortunately “Punishment Island” can’t be produced with substitutes (I tried), you’ll just have travel to Uganda…

…(here’s the commercial part) and visit Birdnest Resort at a shore of Lake Bunyonyi!

DSC00958

View from my room.

DSC01044

Birdnest Resort, as seen from the lake.

I generally don’t approve bloggers openly advertizing things, I personally don’t do it (since I don’t own rights of any of the superheroes I design cocktails to, just doing this for non-profit fun)… but since this post doesn’t contain any references to copyrighted superhero characters, I dare to tell you that Birdnest Resort at Lake Bunyonyi is a great place… because of the scenery, of the flora and fauna… and their cocktail list contains a couple of great designs by Yours Truly ;P

I didn’t make any deal deal with the hotel, I will not get a penny for telling that Birdnest is a great place (it is, honestly)… but I hope you’ll visit Lake Bunyonyi (give my Best Wishes to Isaac at Birdnest’s bar ;P) and visit pygmys: they are a proud people, with heritance of hunterer-gatherers, now forced to live in povetry and squalor… please buy their nice handicraft to support them.

Next time we’ll return to blog’s actual topic, superheroes. No more praising particular hotels… but a few pictures of wildlife, since it inspired me to design superhero cocktails!

Absorbing and Phasing (Kitty Pryde, Parasite)

In a couple of days I’ll be leaving to Africa for a holiday. It’s gonna be nature-oriented trip, savannah safaris and jungle hikes. I’m sure it’s gonna inspire me for some cocktail ideas, in the first place I’m thinking of Black Panther and Gorilla Grodd… but let’s check out today’s recipes first.

Jokukayttis1

KITTY PRYDE

Small and sweet, but still packs the punch; simple as that.

-1 part dark rum

-1 part Amaretto di Saronno

-3 to 4 parts of strawberry juice

Shake with ice and strain into old fashioned glass with some ice in it. Garnish with suitable candy.

As I’ve been hollering dozens of times before, concerning berry juices in cocktails… for strawberry juice use concentrate diluted with water 1:1 instead of recommendation.

This drink contains Amaretto for the same reason I included it in  The Punisher: it’s sweet liqueur, but when combined with certain aromas it gives kinda “surly” taste… Katherine Pryde might seem like your average teenager at first glance, but she’s more than that.

On the other hand… she IS young, same as Peter Parker: that’s why I included “teenage favourite” strawberry juice in both cocktails.

So… easy strawberry juice, combined with surprisingly “murky” Amaretto: dark rum to give the whole shebang “a spine”. I hope you like it.

Parasitekayttis

PARASITE

Yes, it’s supposed to look like sludge! With Hawkeye and Magneto I whined about my inability to photograph purple colour, pics ended up looking bleak and dismal… but with Parasite I succeeded: it will look like silt or something like that, and that’s the point! Let’s face it: parasites (or Parasite) aren’t the most pleasant of all things… so it’s appropriate that the drink looks as inviting as a cess pool. But make no mistake: this cocktail is delicious, among the best I’ve created!!!

-8 cl (3 oz) sweet red vermouth

-2 cl (3/4 oz) Green Chartreuse

-2 cl simple syrup

-one egg white

Shake vigorously with ice and strain into suitable glass with lots of ice in it. Absolutely no garnish: serve it as it is, monitoring people’s faces… their expressions are guaranteed to change after they’ve tasted it.

Try creating more vile looking concoctions by substituting simple syrup for different coloured grenadines.

That’s all, folks. As I said, I’ll be gone for a couple of weeks… and when I’m back I’ll bring you some Africa-inspired superhero cocktails 😀

Liberty… or Death? (Captain America, Dr. Doom)

Publishing these two cocktails has been delayed for too long…

captainamericakayttis

CAPTAIN AMERICA

I’ve bashed Passoã for it’s “juice liqueur for teenagers” taste, first time in Two-Face: it turned out to be a-okay highball, but I thought I’ll never find any other decent use for Passoã… and then I published Flame On!… and now Captain America. So I stand corrected: Passoã is proper liqueur.

In my very first post my guidelines for Man of Steel were “simple, straightforward, blue (of course) and since there’s a word “American”… it has to be sweet and contain bourbon.”

This time I’ll skip bourbon and instead of blue the drink will be red, white and blue… but all the other attributes above can be found in this cocktail.

-4 parts Passoã

-2 parts pineapple juice

-1 part red grenadine

-1 part Triple Sec

-Blue Curacao, cooled in freezer

Shake ingredients (except Blue Curacao) with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Top with a dash of freezingly cold Blue Curacao, it should set between white pineapple juice foam and the rest of the drink.

“Captain America” works well as an after-dinner dessert, he kinda arrives to save the day after the Evil Forces have triumphed for a while. And so, the Evil Force apertif is no one else but…

Drdoonkayttis2

DR. DOOM

This apertif is for those who love vodka martinis, but wouldn’t say no to tiny portion of sweet in their favourite cocktail.

-4 parts vodka

-2 parts Noilly Prat (or in an emergency some other dry vermouth, but N.P. is the best)

-1 part Pisang Ambon

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass.

So: you start with Dr.Doom’s reign of terror, and after that Cap makes a heroic entry. That’s the way it should be 😀

Cosmic Power beyond description… and a fella with a bow, Part II (Hawkeye, Spectre)

I published first part of this theme way back: a cosmic being with immeasurable power… and a dude who is trained in archery. Today we’re gonna take a another look on this subject.

Hawkeyeuusinkayttis

In reality the drink is NOT so “brownish”, it’s purple! I don’t know why, but don’t seem to be able to photograph purple cocktails decently (let’s just recall Magneto ). Frustrating!

HAWKEYE

When I published Green Arrow I could sense the last shreds of summer lingering in the air… now there isn’t one single molecule of summer left, everything is grey and dark and cold. So publishing this now might seem a little “out of place” but I’ll do it anyway 😀

Every single Test Subject told me the same thing: one of these is very delightful, but the second one would be too much… and I agree: this is probably the sweetest cocktail I’ve ever published, be warned.

-5 parts raspberry juice

-2 parts red grenadine

-1 part cream

-2 parts whisky

-1 to 2 parts Blue Curacao

Shake with ice and strain into highball glass with lots of ice in it. Serve with straw or at least with with some kind of a stirrer: if you let the drink stand for a while, the cream will start to separate and grenadine will set on the bottom… this will not happen as fast as it does in Storm, but it will take place eventually. But don’t worry: this will not affect the taste.

And as always… for raspberry juice use concentrate diluted with water 1:1 ratio instead of recommended (usually 1:3 or 1:4).

Green Arrow was sweet; Hawkeye is even sweeter (I doubt I’ll ever design anything that sweet again). Galactus was brisk, and next one is even brisker…

Spectre2

SPECTRE

I find this very titillating apertif. Use small glasses, this is one of the strongest drinks I’ve published.

-2 parts dry gin

-1 part absinth

-1 part Midori

Shake with ice and strain into small apertif glass.

“The Spirit of Vengeance”-version:

-1 part dry gin

-1 part extra dry vermouth

-1 part absinth

-1 part Midori

Shake with ice, as above.

Absinth and Midori… this sounds familiar…?” You’re right, same ingredients can be found in Dr. Octopus! But make no mistake: Doc Ock and Spectre are completely different drinks despite of apparent similarity. Rose’s Lime Cordial makes octopus-frappe sweetish, gin (or gin and vermouth) gives us mordant Spectre. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself: Spectre for apertif, and Doc Ock for after-dinner digestive.

By the way… I’ve used Midori and gin together earlier also, in Killer Croc. But Croc having Green Chartreuse, lime juice and egg white… I’ll doubt anyone would consider it and Spectre (or Dr. Octopus) as “similar drinks”.

Beer Cocktails (Thor, Wolverine)

Last time I promised to publish couple of beer cocktails, so here we go…

Thorkayttis1

THOR

First, when I started to ponder the concept of Thor’s cocktail, I was thinking about Scandinavian ingredients: aquavit, possibly salmiac… but let’s face it: this blog has readers (I’m happy to say) all over the globe, and only handful of them has access to Nordic specialty, salmiac (ammonium chloride). It tastes great, and I used it in my second Wonder Woman version but it’s better to leave it there.

And then, aquavit… with it’s strong caraway aroma it’s best enjoyed as it traditionally is: well freezed, as schnapps before the meal (and/or maybe multiple schnappses during a meal ;P ).

Then I started thinking something more “viking”… and what are they drinking in the Great Halls of Valhalla? Strong mead, of course! So here we go…

-3 parts cold lager

-2 parts cold sweet red vermouth (I used Tosti Rosso)

Build the drink into suitable glass (finally I found decent use for that tankard made out of cow’s horn!). Adding Ice is optional.

Enjoy it next to roaring fire, eating lots of red meat and singing songs for fallen heroes ;P

BE WARNED: This “mead” sure isn’t for everyone (and I mean it: some people love it, some people hate it)… but only the Bravest Warriors make it to Valhalla. And speaking of brave warriors…

EDIT: another version of Thor here.

Wolverinekayttis

WOLVERINE

Logan doesn’t drink fancy cocktails, that’s for sure… but I find “a glass of beer and a shot of whisky” as “Wolverine The Cocktail” a bit lazy solution. A little more effort…

-3 parts cold lager

-1 part cold Lillet Blanc

Build the drink into biggest and baddest beer tankard you can find. Adding ice is optional.

So… my vision for Wolverine’s drink is beer, simple and plain, but Lillet adds that distinctive “spice-and-quinine”-taste, giving the drink Logan’s bitter character.

Also… this recipe is part of my ongoing quest for finding different uses for Lillet Blanc. First I bought it to try Vesper and French Intervention. They’re both great, but there’s a problem… opened Lillet bottle lasts for about two weeks in a fridge before the taste starts to turn, well, not-so-good. Lillet, straight up or even with ice, is way too sweet for my taste and it’s impossible (except for hardcore drunk) to finish the bottle under two weeks, using it only for Vespers and Interventions.

So, I developed Bumblebee, Wasp and Namor… and now there’s Wolverine. Let me be clear about this: Lillet Blanc is great alcohol drink, not just something to be disposed of after enjoying Vesper and French Intervention. Check out the Lillet’s website for more recipes.

EDIT: another version of Wolverine here.

Next time we’ll return to “normal” cocktails, no more beer. Take care!

Green drinks, once again (Martian Manhunter, Mole Man)

Oh my… green superhero/villain cocktails… how many I’ve designed? Killer CrocJokerBaneRiddlerPoison IvyGreen LanternSwamp ThingHulkGreen ArrowDr. OctopusNamorJack O’Lantern… and now two more… and there’ll be more…

But as long as they are different cocktails with unique taste it’s okay, I guess ;P

Martianmanhunterkayttis

MARTIAN MANHUNTER

Designing beer cocktails is a huge challenge! Surprisingly your average lager doesn’t blend well with anything, mixing it with this-and-that arouses beer hidden bitterness, in undesired way. Of course there are good beer cocktail recipes, but to invite your own, something new… well, if I would be scared of challenges, I would not write this blog, would I?

My only beer cocktail so far is Sinestro, but that’s about to change, starting with Martian Manhunter right now…

-lager (I used Heineken)

-Green Chartreuse (10-25% of total lager used)

-Blue Curacao (for colour)

-Tabasco

Build the drink into suitable tall highball/beer glass. Final measurements are up to each individual’s taste, but per standard beer can (330ml or 11.2 oz) I used around 5 cl (2 oz) of Green Chartreuse and about dozen drops of Tabasco; you don’t need much Blue Curacao to turn the drink green (careful, or you’ll end up with blue-ish drink).

Ice cubes and red straw are optional, understandably some people shun them in beer cocktails.

The Big Idea behind the drink… green, as J’onn J’onzz, of course. Chartreuse gives lager “structure”, turns it into actual cocktail (and adds alcohol content, be warned). Tabasco, combined with Chartreuse, introduces the bitter memory of Mars.

Next time I’ll publish more beer cocktails, but before that…

Molemankayttis1

MOLE MAN

Harvey Rupert Elder has pretty virulent and resentful disposition, which is represented with fiery ginger.

-4 parts ginger rum

-4 parts Pisang Ambon

-1 part cream

-1 part simple syrup

Shake with ice and strain into old fashioned glass, add some ice.

To produce ginger rum: add 1 teaspoon of ground ginger into 1dl (3 1/3 oz) of dark rum, little stir. Filter after 15 minutes.

About ginger rum… I’ve been using it too much in my recipes. In Ghost RiderThing and Flame On! and for the first time in Wonder Woman and Flash. I like it, all right, but I should keep in mind that not everyone shares my passion for fiery ginger.

It’s time to say good bye for a week or so. And as I promised, next time I’ll publish couple of beer cocktails… two characters that I feel are best described through beer… Thor and Wolverine.

Preparing for Halloween, Part 2 (Hellboy, The Punisher)

Today I’ll complete my “Halloween Cocktails”- miniseries. I threw Hellboy and The Punisher into recipe compilation with the rest, not just with last post’s Ghost Rider and Jack O’Lantern but also with other scary characters from earlier on: Man-BatEtrigan and, of course, Scarecrow.

Please feel free to download Halloween Cocktail Special, you’ll find it in Recipes and downloads.

But now it’s time for today’s recipes…

Hellboykayttis

HELLBOY

Usually tomato juice is associated with Bloody Mary and it’s kwazillion variants. Don’t get me wrong, eg. Bloody Maria is a-okay drink, but I’m growing pretty tired to the idea that cocktail using tomato juice should automatically include “Tabasco+Worcester Sauce+so on”-flavour set.

This recipe is my answer. Tequila’s sting balanced with Skittles’s sweetness, tomato juice trying to overwhelm them but succeeding only partially in the task.

-1 part Skittles tequila

-1 part tomato juice

Shake with ice and strain into suitable small glass. The colour is not quite “blood” but pretty close (at least it’s red, as is Hellboy), you’ll probably want to emphasize the point with right kind of glass.

What is Skittles tequila? I’ve used it before in ClayfaceDr. Fate and Dr. Strange, you’ll find instructions in those posts. It’s pretty easy to produce… and don’t be intimitated: unfiltered broth will look dis_gus_ting, but have faith in me.

Punisherkayttis1

THE PUNISHER

Who do you fear the most: demons, ghosts… or stone-cold psychopath killer?

Frank Castle is, at least technically, a human being… but his mind is broken (to put it mildly). Somewhere there, in the deepest corner of his troubled mind, lies sweet memory of his brutally slaughtered family; but it’s all buried under dark rage and bloodlust.

With these guidelines I designed this drink…

-3 parts Amaretto di Saronno

-4 parts vodka

-4 parts cranberry juice

-8 to 12 parts Coca Cola

Pour the ingredients (save Cola) into highball glass, stir, add ice. Fill it up with Coke, stirring. Garnish? Maybe a pinch of gunpowder, or handful of spent cartridges ;P

For cranberry juice use concetrate diluted with water 1:1, instead of recommended 1:3 or 1:4 or whatever ratios.

A word about Amaretto di Saronno… Why on Earth do I use such sweet and nice liqueur in drink bearing Punisher’s grim name? I admit: Amaretto, straight up, is anything but “grim”… but if you combine it with suitable “counter-elements” it wavers in the background as a kinda “bittersweetish” aroma.

So I ended up using it in The Punisher, and earlier I used it in Marshal Law. Notice any similarity in these characters?

[EDIT: there’s a new version of Punisher here]

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, EVERYONE!

Preparing for Halloween, Part 1 (Ghost Rider, Jack O’Lantern)

I’ll publish two posts prior to Halloween; they’ll contain cocktail recipes of various scary characters, and of various styles. Without further delay…

Ghostriderkayttis1

GHOST RIDER

This one is, of course, fiery! We’ll reach way back in this blog, and utilise ginger rum, same we used for the first time in my first Wonder Woman inspired drink, Golden Lasso, and in The Flash. It’s also used in my summertime special Fantastic Four drinks, Clobbering Time and Flame On! if you wanna check them out.

So, to produce ginger rum… pour one teaspoon of ground ginger into 1dl (3 1/3 oz) of dark rum, stir a little. Let it soak for 15 mins, filter. Simple as that.

-2 parts ginger rum

-1 part orange juice

-1 part Rose’s Lime Cordial

Shake with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with orange wedge and (naturally) with some sort of skull decoration.

This sure burns like hellfire, but I hear you asking: “why aren’t there any flames in Ghost Rider’s cocktail? After all, he’s a dude with a flaming skull?”

No, no flames in this one. If you yearn for the real fire you’ll have to go for the next one…

jackolanternkayttis1

JACK O’LANTERN

Once again Test Subject S. is affecting my blog… “you must design a flaming drink where you can toast marshmallow!” … so here it is 😀

I love Fernet Branca, I’ve used it eg. in Swamp Thing, Dark Knight and Black Widow. Anyhow, even if some people basically enjoy bitter tinge, Fernet is just too much, too harsh. So I decided to try a little milder Gammel Dansk, and join it in unholy matrimony with something sweet…

-2 parts Gammel Dansk

-3 parts Pisang Ambon

-1 part apple juice

-overproof rum

-marshmallow in suitable pick

Set rum and marshmallow aside, stir other ingredients together and pour into old fashioned glass; absolutely no ice at any point. Carefully top the drink with flammable rum, light it up and serve instantly.

The idea is to toast the marshmallow, put the fire out with suitable lid and enjoy both the candy and the drink.

Please be careful with flaming drinks! Use thick glasses to avoid breakage!

jackolanternkayttis3

Sorry, my manual dexterity isn’t sufficient to take a picture and toast a marshwallow at the same time…

Usually warmed up cocktails taste, well, not so good… but I think Jack is okay, somehow even better if shaken traditonally with ice, skipping the flames. You can try that version also, and save your marshmallows for the campfire.

These were the first two superhero (or supervillain) inspired cocktails for upcoming Halloween, check out the next two next week.
